Celebrating Women's History Month with Augusta Savage
Born in Green Cove Springs, February 29, 1892, Augusta Christine Fells Savage began creating sculptures from natural clay found in her backyard. She moved to Jacksonville in 1920 to support herself by sculpting busts of prominent blacks in the community, but moved to New York City a year later. Best known for her work "The Harp," commissioned by the New York World's Fair in 1939, Savage is being honored here in March by the Highway 17 North Heritage Trail with an information kiosk at the Augusta Savage Arts and Community Center in Green Cove Springs.
Join us for a presentation on Augusta Savage, sculptor. Presenters include Dr. Scott Brown, UNF; and members of the Highway 17 North Heritage Trail project team: Eboné Sapp, Edward Waters University student, and Kaysyn Jones, Florida State University.
Light refreshments served 5:30-6 p.m. Program follows immediately.
